Ernst and Irma Kriel took ownership of Die Wielhuis in 2018, rebranding and remodelling an existing pub on the premises. Irma was born and raised in Gansbaai while Ernst arrived from Gordon’s Bay in the late nineties.
Well known for their knack for creating successful pubs where people love to meet, the Kriels probably hold the title of being the most famous pub owners in Gansbaai’s history. Whether you remember Ernie’s Pub or Buitesteen, their legendary venues have been the backdrop to good times for over two decades.
Irma heads up the kitchen and believes that happy memories start with hearty pub grub and affordable drinks. Ask the couple what they love most about Gansbaai and you’ll hear about the loyal locals who support them – and the travellers from around the globe who become friends. And for the record: nothing on earth beats the spectacular sunsets they get to watch from Die Wielhuis.
